Extreme sports at 30? Absolutely!

"Are you serious? You’re out of your mind again! With that physique? No way—I’d never do it!" These are the reactions I often hear when I casually mention the latest challenge I've taken on—often in some hidden corner of the world. But despite what this introduction might suggest, this isn’t a tale of hilarious mishaps. So far, every attempt has gone surprisingly well, even though my reflexes are more sloth-like than sharp. For a bit of context: I was never really into sports, and to this day, I still manage to trip over door frames or bump into the corner of a bed.
It all began in my early 20s during a trip to Egypt, where I had the chance to do an intro dive and experience the magic of the Red Sea firsthand. I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea—it felt almost otherworldly—but the moment I went under, I was hooked. The rest, as they say, is history.

My real thirst for adventure kicked in as I approached 30. A few years ago, Ádi suggested we learn to snowboard—me, the person who starts shivering below 25°C. I had my doubts and was afraid of failing, but his enthusiasm kept me going. We headed to Zakopane, where, thanks to GoSki, we found an amazing instructor, Greg. This February marked our fourth year hitting the slopes with him, and if you’re thinking about learning, I can’t recommend him and the GoSki team enough. Then there was our whitewater rafting adventure in Bali. They took us to a river, but even getting there felt like an extreme sport—the steep staircase leading down was a challenge on its own. Soon, the rain started pouring, and we had no idea just how intense the experience would become. At times, navigating the rocky sections, I almost felt like Bear Grylls. It turned into a memory I’ll carry for life.

In the Azores, we tried canyoning—something I hadn’t even heard of before. We hiked along rocky trails, rappelled down waterfalls (fully geared up, of course), and leaped off cliffs into icy lakes. It was an incredibly freeing experience, a true immersion in nature. One of my most unforgettable adventures was water skiing in Mauritius. The hotel offered the chance to try it, and after days of hesitation—partly because I figured dental work there might be pricey—I finally gave in. The instructors spent minutes drilling the basics into me: keep your legs steady, grip tight, don’t let go, and if you fall, the boat will come back for you. I’m not sure who was more shocked—me or the people on the boat—but on my very first attempt, I managed to stay upright for a full 57 seconds. Probably just beginner’s luck. As the saying goes, quit while you're ahead—so I haven’t tried it since. But who knows what the future holds?
At the end of the day, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to start something new, and saying yes to adventure is always worth it. Traveling is the perfect opportunity for this—every destination offers something unique to tempt you out of your comfort zone. The best part? These experiences have given me a huge confidence boost. I’m far less hesitant to try new things now because, really, what’s the worst that can happen? If something doesn’t click or I don’t fall in love with it, I’ve lost nothing—but I’ve gained a new experience. I may never be an extreme sports pro, but snowboarding and diving will always have my heart. So don’t overthink it—just go for it!
