Barbados: The unexpected caribbean adventure

Updated: Sep 5

My latest journey took me to a place that was considered so extraordinary, that it surprised everyone around me. I didn’t choose the popular touristic areas of Greece, Italy, Cyprus or the Maldives. I choose Barbados.

Embarassingly enough, the only things that came to my mind were Rihanna, who was born here, the beautiful palm trees and the rum (though I’m not a huge fan of that). I also knew that it can be found in the Caribbean, but nothing else.

Most of the travel plans usually come spontaneously, after a conversation about how tiring the monotonous days and everyday tasks can be. These are the moments when I’m looking for something that I can really look forward to in the short term, while I keep chasing my longer term goals.

This is how Barbados came into the picture. The only thing that was certain, that we should book something during spring with my boyfriend, since we can’t travel in autumn and we’ll spend the summer with ad hoc adventures.

Google is my best frend, so I instantly typed into the search field: ’Where to travel in April?’. You can imagine the size of the list that popped up, so it wasn’t helpful in the way I expected it to be. I started to limit the search criteria and thought about previous plans: Mexico, Zanzibar, Madeira or maybe going back to a place where I’ve already been.

The whole evening was spent with diving into the options of booking.com and different flight search engines with no success. I didn’t find anything that would have been the right choice.

Due to the lack of success, I went to bed in a pissed off, grumpy mood. The day after, unexpectedly I received 2 links in messenger from my boyfriend: one was leading me to a British Airways flight at a surprisingly good rate with great connection option, the other one to an oceanfront apartment. Who could say no to that? Spoiler alert – I couldn’t.

I spent a few days to find better options, meaning finding a flight ticket with better rates on different dates and another accomodation that was a better value for money. I did everything I could, but I found nothing. This was the moment when I said, my vacation days are approved, let’s book the tickets.

This is how an amazing vacation started, where I could spend 12 days on a beautiful island, that I didn’t even dare to dream about. It wasn’t even on my bucket list. Now it is there! Come with me and I’ll tell about this journey, the places I visited, the tips and tricks that you should know prior to going to Barbados.
